A note about Compass North and Homer Alaska: My characters and story are fictional. However, the setting for this novel, Homer, is a very real place. Authors are often cautioned against placing their stories in an identified physical site, because readers sometimes become disturbed (and occasionally irate) if the described locations differ from the readers' experience and knowledge of them. So be warned--I have invented some specific locations and altered the characteristics of others. In spite of these deviations, I hope I have captured the essence of my feelings and impressions of the community of Homer. It is a very special and beautiful place.
The city of Homer is located on the Kenai Peninsula in south-central Alaska, about 225 miles by road from the major hub of Anchorage. Homer sits on the shore of Kachemak Bay. Mountains, many with huge glaciers, surround the bay, circling a pristine maritime environment that nurtures abundant sea life and migratory birds.
